Microsoft confirmed to TechCrunch on Monday that it will permanently end support and shut down its Outlook Lite email application on May 26.

First launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was built as a low-resource, lightweight alternative to the full standard Outlook mobile app. It was specifically designed to work well on entry-level Android phones with limited internal storage, and for users in regions with slower, less reliable mobile internet connections.

The app has been marked for retirement for some time: Microsoft first announced last year that Outlook Lite would be pulled from the Google Play Store in October 2025. The company has now confirmed that users who still have the app installed on their devices will lose all functionality starting next month, far ahead of the originally scheduled store removal date.

News of the imminent shutdown was first broken by technology publication Neowin.

“To continue enjoying a secure and feature-rich email experience, we recommend switching to Outlook Mobile,” Microsoft noted in an updated support page for Outlook Lite users.

Existing Outlook Lite users will retain full access to all their existing account data — including email messages, calendar entries, and saved attachments — after signing into the main Outlook Mobile app with their existing credentials. Any user opening Outlook Lite after the shutdown date will automatically be redirected to the Google Play Store to download the full standard version of Outlook.
