Spotify launches the ability to purchase physical books in the us and uk

Back in February, Spotify pulled off a surprising, somewhat unorthodox expansion by stepping into the physical book retail space. As of this week, the new purchasing functionality has officially gone live for users in the United States and the United Kingdom, letting customers order physical copies of books directly through the Spotify mobile app.

The offering is the result of a partnership with Bookshop.org, an online book marketplace built specifically to support local, independent brick-and-mortar bookstores. On any Spotify audiobook listing within the app, users will now see a new call-to-action button marked “Get a copy for your bookshelf.” Tapping this button redirects users to the Bookshop.org website, where the third-party platform handles all order logistics including pricing, inventory, and shipping.

Right now, the physical book purchase option is available exclusively to Spotify users on Android devices. iOS users will gain access to the feature next week, per the company’s rollout schedule.

This latest launch cements Spotify’s standing as an emerging competitor to established major booksellers, as the streaming giant works to evolve into a full-service one-stop hub for all types of book lovers. The new physical book offering also ties into Spotify’s broader corporate strategy centered on boosting long-term profitability. To advance that goal, the platform has already rolled out subscription price increases for users across the U.S. and Europe, and recently announced it hit a major milestone of 751 million monthly active listeners globally.

Physical book sales are not the only update Spotify is rolling out from the slate of new features it first announced back in February. One key upgrade is the expansion of its “Page Match” tool, which now supports more than 30 additional languages including French, German, and Swedish. Page Match lets users scan a page from a physical book or e-book using their smartphone camera; the tool analyzes the scanned content and automatically redirects users to the corresponding section of the matching audiobook on Spotify.

Since Page Match first launched exclusively for English-language books in February, Spotify has released strong early usage data for the feature. The company reports that users who engage with Page Match stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours per week than listeners who do not use the tool. Additionally, 62% of the audiobook titles accessed via Page Match are books that the user had never streamed on Spotify before.

Another new update is the official full rollout of “Audiobook Recaps” for Android devices. This feature generates short, custom audio summaries that recap where a user left off in their current story, making it far easier to jump back into listening after a break.

Rounding out the latest round of announcements, Spotify confirmed that “Audiobook Charts” — modeled after the platform’s popular existing Music and Podcast Charts — is now available to users in Germany, following its earlier rollout in the U.S. and U.K. These charts highlight the most popular and trending audiobooks on Spotify, helping users discover their next favorite listen.
