Google Rolls Out Native Gemini App for macOS, Catching Up to Rival AI Providers

On Wednesday, Google announced the launch of a fully native Gemini application for Apple Mac computers, bringing its AI offering in line with top competitors OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have offered dedicated native Mac clients for their AI tools for quite some time.

“Now, you can pull up Gemini from anywhere in your Mac workflow with a quick global shortcut (Option + Space) to get instant help, without ever switching browser tabs,” Google explained in an official blog post announcing the update. “Whether you’re drafting a market report and need to verify a key date, or building a budget in a spreadsheet and need help crafting the right formula, you can get an answer in seconds and jump straight back to your work.”

A standout upgrade from the browser-based Gemini experience is that the new native app lets users share any content currently displayed on their screen directly with the AI to get context-specific help for your current task — including content pulled from local files stored on your device.

For example, if you’re viewing a complex data chart saved locally on your Mac, you can simply prompt Gemini with “What are the three biggest takeaways here?” to receive an immediate, tailored summary without needing to upload or reformat the file separately.

The app also supports access to Google’s latest generative media tools: users can generate custom images with the Nano Banana model and create AI videos with Google’s Veo video generation platform, all directly within the native app.

Starting today, the native macOS Gemini app is available globally to all Gemini users running macOS version 15 or higher. Interested users can download the app directly at gemini.google/mac.
